ACT-SO

Since 1978, the NAACP ACT-SO Program, often referred to as the “Olympics of the Mind,” has identified, enhanced, rewarded and showcased academic and artistic excellence among minority high school students nationwide. This year-long enrichment program identifies students unique talents, provides them with mentoring and coaching opportunities to perfect their talents and skills, and lastly allows them to test their skills against their peers in local and national competitions for cash awards, scholarships, equipment and prizes.

ACT-SO is a community effort that involves the mobilization of adults to serve as mentors, coaches and judges in the twenty-five categories of competition offered. Our goal is to provide our students with the knowledge, confidence, resources and support needed to achieve their dreams and realize their full potential. (

Youth Council

The NAACP believes strongly that future leaders must be developed today, and such development is ongoing in the Youth & College Division, created in 1936. Today there are more than 400 Youth Councils and College Chapters actively involved in voter registration.

The NAACP has one of the largest organized groups of young people of any secular organization in the country. Some 67,000 youth are involved with the NAACP through its Youth Councils and College Division.  Its objectives are to inspire, motivate, and create interest in civic activities; provide young people with an understanding of pertinent issues; develop organizational skills for implementation of community-related activities; and encourage active participation in these activities.  (learn more)
